Fire Extinguisher Inspection and Service

portable fire extinguisher
All fire safety equipment needs to be logged by type and location with a program of regular inspection. It is vital that equipment is in position and functional before any incident as later will be of no use to anyone. The interval of inspection will vary dependant on the local laws and regulation as well as the requirements outlined in your fire insurance policy. Such inspection should always be carried out by a suitably trained certified or competent person.

All companies and institutions whatever the size should have a well documented plan for inspection of all safety equipment. Doing so will help to ensure such equipment is available to save lives when necessary and also to provide an audit trail in case of investigation following an incident.

Inspection should include ensuring correct positioning of equipment, suitable type for the fire hazards that are present as well as checking locking pins and anti-tamper seals. Any extinguisher that is pressurized with an indication gauge should be monitored for correct pressure. Checks for damage, leakage and corrosion should be made. The due service date should be checked to ensure extinguisher is in date.
